The summer after 7th grade, I started taking college science and math classes at a community college. I ended up skipping to 9th grade, after talking with the principal of the local high school (who recommended that I consider TAMS when I was ready). After one year in high school, I talked to the principal again, and he supported my TAMS application, so I skipped 10th grade (I had to take a few tests to prove that I knew what I was doing). That's how I ended up as a 14-year-old college freshman. In summary: TAMS didn't have to proactively reach out to others; if anything, with just 150 openings per year, for the entire vast state of Texas, they had far more interest than there were resources available. They counted on school principals to identify the appropriate candidates and to encourage them to apply.
