People just aren't intrigued by a sort of forced mixer--it is definitely cultural. Two things. First, folks are constantly reaching out and proactively connecting to perspectives and points of view far outside. I can vouch for that in that I've met more interesting people in a year of trips to SF than I have in my whole career. The other was that it is totally not allowed to ask folks in startups to travel or miss a day--I stepped on that one in another forum where I suggested a founder go up to a woman's tech conference in seattle. It is always crunch time. So I'm not sure what to suggest.
