Subject: Funding Inquiry
To: [email protected]
Dear Mr. Epstein,
Greetings from the University of Maryland. I am a Professor of Cross-Cultural Psychology at UMD and wanted
to inquire about whether your foundation would have any possible interest in funding basic research on
understanding cultural differences and their implications for conflict, particularly in the Middle East. I run
several multidisciplinary research projects that bring together psychologists, computer scientists and
neuroscientists to understand how and why cultures vary (see attached article in Science on tightness-looseness),
and their evolutionary and neurobiologial foundations. Much of our work is advancing basic theory but also is
geared toward improving intercultural relations and decreasing revenge and conflict. My website describes the
work (http://www.gelfand.umd.edu) and my CV is attached. I would be happy to discuss over skype or in person
if it would be of interest.
Thanks in advance,
Best
Michele Gelfand
