She doesn't even seem 80; she seems probably 60. My father's dad, and his name isas well, my grandfather, he seems okay. I do talk to some of my dad's — like my aunts and cousins end stuff like that on my dad's side. And Pm sorry, you did ask me if I had cousins and stuff like that, didn't you? Right. Yeah, I do, I have a whole bunch of 4 them. 5 Q. We would take up eight hours just talking about each and every one of them. A. Exactly. Q. Are there any that are significant in your life that you see on a monthly basis or is it kind of family get-togethers you see them? A. Well, they're in and my -- most of my dad's family. The rest them are in -nd then me and my mom and my brother and my stepfather,■ we live here, but - and my Q. Okay. Now, a lot of times terms get used, and what they mean by kind of general population and what they mean medically are a little different, so when you 111 r A. But they haven't -- I honestly don't believe 1 2 3 4 Q. And I may ask you a little more later about 5 yourself. 6 A. Okay. 7 Q. But how about your family? 8 A. My mother, she is a recovering addict for 9 going on three years now. 10 Q. Okay. Good for her. 11 A. As well as my stepfather,IM 12 Q. What did mom use? 13 A. She was addicted to crack cocaine, both her 14 and my stepfather. 15 Q. Okay. And do you know roughly how long she 16 used for? 17 A. Over 20 years. 18 Q. Okay. And this is -- you'retow, so she 19 started after you were born? 20 A. Honestly, I don't know. I don't know If she 21 was you know, was using and got pregnant with me and 22 stopped. I don't really know the whole scenario, but.. 23 Q. Do you know one way or the other if you may 24 have been exposed in the utero to cocaine? 25 A. I'm sorry? Page 16 that they've really diagnosed him with that, but I don't see why they haven't. Q. Okay. I think that's one of those things that's okay to give a ballpark on. A. Right. Q. Okay. She -- she's told me no, because I had asked her. Q. Okay. All right. And was it just cocaine, or did she use anything else like alcohol or marijuana 7 A. No, I believe just crack cocaine. 8 Q. How did she get clean? 9 A. She had a well, she lost everything she had 10 multiple times and she just hit rock bottom. I guess 11 she just was ready to change, ! suppose. Ever since, 12 she's held strong and hasn't gone back to that 13 lifestyle. 14 Brief interruption in proceedings.) 15 BY DR. HALL: 16 Q. I just had to stop there fora second due to 17 mechanical problems with the camera. 18 So we were talking about mom and how she had a 19 little bit of a substance problem. 20 A. Right. 21 Q. How did that affect your relationship with 22 her? 23 A. Well, not only did it affect our relationship 24 but it affected my whole lifestyle for when I was 25 younger. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 situation was and took me in for quite a while. Q. Okay. Can I et the name of that person — A. Y ..kay. And how long did you stay with the A. For a while. Probably — probably three years off and on, give or take. Q. Okay. Was DCF ever involved when you were growing up? A. No. Weird enough, no. Q. And how did your brother do with all of this? Was he also kind of — A. Actually, my brother, before my mother really got heavy into her addiction, I believe she was -- she would always kind of maintain her house, like a functioning addict. And so during that time, my brother was there, but my brother kind of was going down the wrong road. My mom seen that and he actually was sent over to the West Coast with my wild side of the family, my father's side, and he lived with my grandparents for pretty much the whole time that my mom really was out and about doing her own thing, so... Q. Okay. Was there ever episodes of violence between you and your mom related to her drug use? Page 19 1 Q. Okay. In what way? 1 2 A. Homeless, and every way around. I mean, I 2 3 guess that's generally everything. You know, my 3 4 schooling. 4 5 Q. Okay. How long were you homeless for? 5 6 A. I mean, they always had, as in homeless, they 6 7 always had a place — they were always — had a place to 7 9 stay. They lived in efficiencies, hotels. They would 8 9 kind of jump from hotel to hotel or whatever, and I 9 10 could always go stay with them, but I never wanted to go 10 11 stay with them because of them using, obviously. So I 11 12 don't think nobody wants to see that. 12 13 Q. Right. 13 14 A. So between the age of, I would say, 13, 14, 14 15 around about — 15 16 Q. Okay. 16 11 A. -- until she got clean three years ago, I was 17 18 kind of — I was I mean, after I turned.I — 18 19 well, before I was even= I made my own way, started 19 20 so I could, you know, make money to provide for my own 20 21 self. But before that, you know, I was — stay at a 21 22 friends house, jump from friend's to friend's house. 22 23 And a lot of the parents knew. You know, it wasn't a 23 24 secret that — what my situation was, so, you know, one 24 25 friend in particular, her father really knew what the 25 Q. And roughly, what time was t. A. I believe I was 16. Q. Okay. Do you remember the month or year or how do you kind of keep that straight in your head time wise? Any — A. I don't really remember the month or year. I would maybe say — ! honestly — ! couldn't even tell you. I couldn't even tell you. Q. Okay. Q. Okay. Yeah, I can check if I need to. I was just -- sometimes people have certain events in their lives that they remember things about — A. Right. Q. -- you know, their 16th birthday — A. Definitely. Honestly, I — now that I think about it, I think I was a little younger than age 16 when that all occurred. Q. NI put a question mark next to it. A. Right, but no. 1 mean, I know I was — I was probably — I think I was probably starting to be a Freshman Q. Okay. A. I was supposed to be going to school. I think it was in the summer time, but I could be wrong. Q. Fair enough. And that would have been about seven years ago now or eight years ago? A. Well, 1' So, yeah, about seven or eight years ago. Q. How did you get along with your stepfather? I apologize if I've already asked that. You said Page 24 1 Q. Did they ever shoot it or snort it? 2 A. I have no idea. 3 Q. You never witnessed them doing it in front of 4 you? 5 A. Right. 6 Q. Okay. I trained up in the Baltimore area. and 7 I saw a lot of very heavy cocaine use. 8 A. Oh, okay. 9 Q. Fonts up there usually would either go by 10 munber of rocks they were using or dollar amount. 11 A. Oh. 12 Q. Just like kind of an idea down in 13 S how much would a rock of cocaine go for' 14 A. I'm — I don't really know. I would guess 20 15 bucks, 25 bucks, !think. 16 Q. Okay. Would that be a big rock you could 17 break up into multiples, or... 18 A. I have no idea. 19 Q. No idea? 20 A. I have no idea. 21 Q. Okay. We used to talk about $5 and $10 hits 22 all the time in Baltimore. 23 A. Okay. 24 Q. 'Just want to make sure my -- 25 A Right. I mean, they could have that down Page 23 1 generally a good relationship? 2 A. Yeah, generally good. 3 Q. Okay. Ever get into fights with him or have 4 any trouble — S A. I mean, arguments over obviously the crazy lifestyle they were living and everything else. So 7 arguments, but there was always unconditional love. I 8 could always — if there was anything ever wrong, you 9 know, sometimes they would be kind of missing in action. 10 but for the most pan, I did 'mow where they were. If 11 they were in hotel rooms, we did keep contact. If there 12 was anything ever wrong — they were using, it sounds 13 crazy, but they did give me unconditional love, like, 14 you know... 15 Q. Okay. All right. It's good to know that you 16 felt that they were at least there. 17 A. Definitely. They might not have been there, 18 you know, drug-wise. I know that they were using and 19. everything else, but my mother -- 20 Q. Do you know roughly how much they were using a 21 day? 22 A. No, I have no idea. 23 Q. Okay. And it was crack so they were smoking 24 it? 25 A. Yes. Pug( 1 here, too. Pm not really, really sure. 2 Q. They had the eight balls, which were the big 3 ones but again, you were supposed to break that up or do 4 whatever. 5 A. No. 6 Q. Okay. Any issues with alcohol or... 7 A. No. 8 Q. How did they get money to support their habit? 9 A. Like I said, my mom was always kind of like an 10 active addict, so she always carried a job, and for the 11 most pert my stepfather did, too. 12 Q. Okay. So there was no stealing or — 13 A. No. My mother was always a wait — 14 Q. -- trading sex for favors? 15 A. No. My mother was always a waitress at -- 16 like at the worked fora very long time. 17 various restaurants. She always stayed at 18 each restaurant for a year, you know. Always long term 19 for the most part 20 And my ste.pfa ever since I could 21 remember, he di til just recently when he 22 star But he's been in 23 the usiness for a really long time. 24 Q. Okay. It could have been better, I suppose, 1 would 4 say. 5 Q. Okay. 6 A. And more -- more of my teenage years, I guess 7 I would say. As my childhood, I always remember happy 8 memories and stuff like that. Like, I don't remember 9 ever being sad or neglected or hungry or anything like 10 that. It was more when I turned, you know, 13, when I 11 got into my teenage years. 12 Q. Okay. So teenage years were definitely worse 13 for you than -- 14 A. Definitely. 15 Q. Okay. How were you disciplined as a child 16 growing up? 17 A. I mean, if I did something wrong, talked back, 18 1 got put in time-out. There was definitely sonic form 19 of discipline. She would never let me do whatever I 20 wanted to but, you }mow, when I turned 12 and or 13, she 21 was kind of wanting to do what she wanted to do, and she 22 did kind of get more lenient on me where I was able to 23 go out. Sometimes I would leave and not tell her where 24 I was going or, you know... 25 Q. Okay. So it was never like physical Page 28 1 were younger, I never remember us getting really 2 physical with one another. 3 Q. Okay. What type of activities or clubs did 4 you belong to? 5 A. Wheal was in middle school — I was always a 6 straight A student from elementary to middle before, and 7 then I dropped out. 1 was always honor roll, straight A 8 student, I was in a lot of activities, I was on the 9 track team, I was the first chair trumpet player. 10 Q. Okay. 11 A. I was the captain of the cheerleading squad, I 12 was a mediator. 13 Q. Hold on one second. So captain of the 14 cheerleading squad, first trumpet? 15 A. First chair trumpet player. 16 Q. And that was school band I guess, or marching 17 band? 18 A. Yes. It wt this was all 19 at. 20 Q. Okay. 21 A. Whe that one teacher got shot 22 at, ifs the same. t ow if you probably heard 23 of that, around two years ago. 24 Q. No. 1 didn't grow up in 25 A. Okay. 1 2 3 4 5 Page 27 punishment like spankings or anything like that; it was time-out and grounding? A. Right, no. My mother has never put her hand 6 Q. Okay. And any major physical confrontations 7 with your brother or -- 8 A. Oh, me and him? 9 Q. Yes. 10 A. Yes. When we were younger, before he got sent 11 over to the West Coast, we used to fight like cats and 12 dogs. 13 Q. And would that be kind of like — it's hard to 14 even say, because there's no such answer to normal 15 brother/sister at times, but normal brother and sister 16 type of things? 17 A. Right. You know, I would use the phone and he 18 wants to use the phone and I'm on it first and it 19 escalated. Just very simple stupid stuff we would argue 20 . about. . 21 Q. Okay. And would it get physical or just — 22 A. I mean, a couple of times we did honestly get 23 physical with one another but, you know, that was kind 24 of when I was 12, 13, before he was sent over to the 25 West Coast, when we were a little bit older. It's always -- nothing 8 has ever gotten out of control where, you know -- if I 9 ever had a problem with the customer, I just go up to 10 the closest floor guy, bouncer that there is.
