They are loved and hated, they create fear and passion from the art critics. They are not only extremely talented draftsmen but their unique mad creativity sets them apart from the pack. We love them and want to introduce them to you properly as it is a unique world you are about to enter 'Who would want to paint you when no one wants to look at you?' says an old epigrammatist to a misshapen man. Many a modern artist would say, 'No matter how misshapen you are, I will paint you. Though people may not like to look at you, they will be glad to look at my picture: not as a portrait of you, but as a proof of my skill in making so close a copy of such a monster.' Laocoon, On the Limitations of Painting and Poetry (1766) lake and Dinos Chapman reinterpreted a set of Goya etchings from the series of 'Los Caprichios' and have painted directly onto the etchings faces of monsters with googly eyes and funny faces. Their irreverent, and always humorous approach never hides a very serious attempt to hold high the values of adolescent youth. However, what Goya, and the Chapmans after him, propose is that the individual imagination is never content to be subsumed in a collective identity - ordinary people acting only as a group - but must express its participation in acts of control through direct, immediate, local expressions of power, all too often in appalling acts of brutality. The opposition of traditional and innovative societies, of anciens regimes and revolutionary states, also remodels the symbolic meaning of youth, a key topos in the oeuvre of the Chapmans. We have currently commissioned lake and Dinos to paint a whole set of etchings for us and we are proud to offer them to you exclusively.
