From: on behalf of Ben Goertzel <ail To: Jeffrey Epstein <[email protected]> Subject: brief update, and question: Interested to fund the video recording and editing of the AGI Summer School lectures, for $2K? Date: Wed, 29 Apr 2009 22:57:31 +0000 Hi Jeffrey, Quick financial update: I've sorted out how to cover my own expenses thru mid-July, via the investment Novamente received. I've been carrying on with the mathematical formalization stuff I've been doing for the last couple months. But the main topic of this email is: For 3 weeks in June/July I'll be leading the world's first AGI Summer School, which will be in Xiamen, China http://www.goertzel.org/AGI_Summer_School_2009.htm As with pretty much every such endeavor in the current economy, funding is rather tight. We're right at the point where tuition from students will match stipends to faculty (and note that my own stipend will be covering my expenses for a couple weeks). Some of the lectures are quite general in scope, and about 1/3 of them are fairly specific to my OpenCog project. There will be 7 international faculty giving the lectures, including me. I'd like to have the lectures effectively recorded and edited and placed online, so as to educate folks who can't make it to China this summer. I don't trust the Chinese university to do this ... to make a long story short, they have a special Chinese way of screwing things up. I found someone (Raj Dye) who is enthused to record and edit the lectures for free, but I need $2000 to cover his airfare and room and board. Question is whether you're interested to donate $2K to the summer school for this purpose. -- Ben Ben Goertzel, PhD CEO, Novamente LLC and Biomind LLC Director of Research, SIAI Critical threshold: Being generally intelligent enough to be disappointed by one's own lack of general intelligence EFTA00774433

EFTA00700552 - Goertzel-Arel 'Robot Toddler' AGI Proposal for Epstein Foundation

DOJ-released document from Data Set 9 containing the draft research and development proposal prepared by AI researchers Ben Goertzel and Itamar Arel for the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation. The proposal outlines a $3 million project to develop a 'robotic AGI toddler' — an artificial general intelligence system 'with the rough general intelligence of a human 3-4 year old child, demonstrated via embodiment in virtual world characters and humanoid robots.' Arel was designated as primary investigator, contributing his DeSTIN (Deep SpatioTemporal Inference Network) facial recognition system developed at the University of Tennessee using graduate student labor. Goertzel, who received direct salary from the Epstein Foundation, proposed the project and suggested additional hundreds of thousands in funding for Arel's research assistants. This document is central to understanding Epstein's funding of cutting-edge AI research through academic intermediaries.
