Terje,
just back from Geneva I wanted to give you a quick update on my meeting with Christopher Elias, MD, MPH, president of
the Global Development Division at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He leads the foundation's work with
partners to develop and implement innovative, integrated strategies that enable people in developing countries
to overcome hunger, poverty, and disease.
Last week he met with Nasra and Michael in NY. My impression is that Mr. Elias felt that IPI, in particular Nasra,
provided unique information on the security situation in polio-affected regions in Pakistan and Afghanistan
which is apparently very helpful to the Gates foundation. He was also aware, and appreciative, of the work we
have done in Nigeria and Somalia. I took the opportunity to brief him on our work on peace and health,
particularly our upcoming high-level event on pandemics in Geneva in September. He provided me with names
of possible participants including relevant ministers.
Mr. Elias expressed strong support for the continuation of the Gates foundation's cooperation with IPI. He said
that he will raise the issue with Mr. Gates during his next regular meeting . He also suggested that you raise the
issue with Mr. Gates.
Will send you an separate email on my meetings with Prince Zeid , Michael Moeller, Margaret Chan and Kofi
Annan,
Andrea
