There are some very smart and interesting people like Michael Nielsen, http://michaelnielsen.org , who's agendas are almost entirely confined to the scientific community. My focus is very long term, and not very effected by do-gooding cliche, but a-la Szilard, it really is generally directed by what I expect to be important. Domains like fundamental physics, while they sound very interesting, seem unlikely to be important enough to justify the level of expertise needed to reliably determine what's really high-leverage (although I do vaguely think that anyone who hasn't jumped onto the information theoretic bandwagon by now should probably get with the program). OTOH, you mention 'cures' here, and I'm certainly familiar with a lot of those. Especially in regenerative medicine and cancer, though schizophrenia and OCD interest me much more.
