All told, this is one of the most culturally interesting places in the world and only a 5 hour flight from JFK. For things to do: 1. Visit Tikal, the most impressive Mayan city ever discovered (a one hour flight by small plane from GC airport, stay at La Lancha). 2. Antigua de Guatemala, a Spanish colonial city that was larger than any city in North America when it was abandoned in 1777 due to a threatened volcanic eruption that never occurred (stay at Pensativa House Hotel.) 3. Chichicastenango, a wonderful Indian market town (not to be missed on a market day - absolutely amazing on a religious holiday such as Easter. Stay at the Mayan Inn. See the churches and shop bargains!) 4. Lake Atitlan, a 1,600 ft. deep lake in the mouth of an extinct volcano with Indian villages, accessible only by boat, around it. (Stay at Hotel Casa Palopo.)
