This morning I bought an incredible piece of art. Its hard to explain, but I think it may be the culmination of 30 years of
learning. I haven't seen it, I bought it from photos. It is a silk banner about 6' by 5' with two deer facing each other. It is
7th c. and had to belong to the King of Tibet. He had it made by Sogdian weavers (wiki) and brought over the silk road to
his palace. These kings were powerful dudes. They conquered the Chinese capital of Xian. They would take their entire
palace court on a hunt for more than a year. They would send many thousand soldiers to form a ring that was said to be a
thousand miles in length. Over the ensuing weeks they would walk the ring closed so as to drive the animals to the
campsite where the hunt finally took place. The tents were elaborate beyond belief with cups of silver and ewers of gold.
Our silk banner would have adorned the Tsenpo's tent. It is in perfect shape. I have never seen it, but for years I have
visualized what must have been in these royal tents.
