Dear Mr. Epstein,
Ellis Rubinstein tried to introduce us in October but failed due to the complexity of coordinating 3 calendars.
I'm following up at his recommendation with the hope that we may find it easier to meet directly. I direct the
largest and most productive center for pathogen surveillance and discovery. Housed at Columbia, the Center
for Infection and Immunity and associated WHO Collaborating Centre, is poised to expand from
metagenomic and zoonotic diseases research to address the role of gene-environment-timing interactions in
neurodevelopmental, neoplastic and autoimmune disorders. The strategies and tools needed to do this are
largely the same; thus, I'm confident this new initiative can succeed and have a huge impact on human

morbidity and mortality. Please suggest a date and time we can meet to discuss your vision for basic and
translational public health and see whether a collaboration makes sense.
All best wishes,
Ian Lipkin
