As promised, attached please find a hi-resolution image, catalogue spread and condition report of the Twombly [Lot 15B] is in our Post War & Contemporary Evening Sale on Wednesday, November 151h. Untitled is over 10 feet tall, sixteen feet in length —it is the largest format canvas from the Bacchus series (only Untitled from the Pinault Collection is the same size) Twombly executed 21 Bacchus paintings total-six paintings in 2004; 8 paintings in 2005; and seven paintings in 2008 Spiraling use of graphic loop is reminiscent of his "blackboard" lasso-loop paintings of the late 1960s (one of which holds the auction record for the artist) but expanding into wilder and more visceral form; loop imagery also reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci's "deluge" drawings Theme of this series of paintings is Bacchus/Dionysus —classical god of wine and drinking —that recalls the classical influence of his paintings from the late 1950s-1960s (ex: Leda and the Swan) This painting part of set titled Bacchus Psilax Mainomenos (presented under this title in the 2005 Gagosian show): psilax means "wings," referring to aspect of Bacchus that lifts spirit to heights of sensual pleasure/intoxication; mainomenos invokes raging Bacchus, signifying violence, rage, fury, the description of the god used by Homer in his first appearance in the Iliad As always, do not hesitate to contact me for additional information.
