From: Ben Goertzel cza> To: Jeffrey Epstein <[email protected]> Cc: Ben Goertzel Subject: Re: AGI R&D Proposal Date: Mon, 02 Dec 2013 12:03:02 +0000 Thanks so much re the 45K !!! I am pretty confident this will be the year we, at least, produce interesting stuff to show off from OpenCog.... We already have lots of cool stuff on the back end, so it's "just" a matter of getting to the point where this AI work is interestingly enough demonstrated thru the game character.. And your focus on deception is an interesting one, so one of my goals will be to be able to show you AI agents intentionally tricking each other by the end of 2014 ;) And, yeah, I will ping you in 2 weeks regarding the full program.... I really do hope we can move toward the full program this time... If you are wiling to seriously help with the full program, I may be able to recruit other science/tech-savvy high net worth individuals I've met over the years, to contribute as well. You are exceptionally visionary, yet you're of course not the only high net worth individual to see the value in AGI and feel the time for it may be near. I think there's a very real possibility to put a full-scale AGI project together now. Given the recent high profile of stuff like IBM Watson, Kurzweil, self-driving cars and the like, I think the challenges in building enthusiasm for such a thing should be considerably less than 5 years ago let alone 10 or 15 In the proposal this time around, I've tried to balance real-world applicability with pure R&D. I suspect this will help the proposal to appeal more broadly to people who, unlike you and me, don't have such an appreciation for abstraction... Anyway, I look forward to discussion on the broader proposal in a couple weeks. Obviously, the proposal I sent is merely a first stab and there are many forms such a project could ultimately take... yours Ben On Monday, December 2, 2013, Jeffrey Epstein wrote: ill do the 45k, of course. and please ping me again in two weeks re full program On Mon, Dec 2, 2013 at 6:44 AM, Ben Goertzel a wrote: .. this version has a typo fixed ;p On Mon, Dec 2, 2013 at 7:40 PM, Ben Goertzel a wrote: > Hi Jeffrey, > Attached find a research proposal such as we discussed. > Please let me know when you'd like to talk next; I can make myself > available anytime for this, but late morning or early evening your > time works ideally given the time zone differences... EFTA00700552 - Goertzel-Arel 'Robot Toddler' AGI Proposal for Epstein Foundation

DOJ-released document from Data Set 9 containing the draft research and development proposal prepared by AI researchers Ben Goertzel and Itamar Arel for the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation. The proposal outlines a $3 million project to develop a 'robotic AGI toddler' — an artificial general intelligence system 'with the rough general intelligence of a human 3-4 year old child, demonstrated via embodiment in virtual world characters and humanoid robots.' Arel was designated as primary investigator, contributing his DeSTIN (Deep SpatioTemporal Inference Network) facial recognition system developed at the University of Tennessee using graduate student labor. Goertzel, who received direct salary from the Epstein Foundation, proposed the project and suggested additional hundreds of thousands in funding for Arel's research assistants. This document is central to understanding Epstein's funding of cutting-edge AI research through academic intermediaries.
