He's smart and has been in this field longer than me. I need to get more advice from him about handling my students and post docs I think. Good point about control. I think one thing is for us to set up a not profit to which I can eject myself and the good people if I decide to bail or if I get kicked out. I think it should/could be designed like the Broad. Eric Lander is a friend and I'm talking to him about how he's structured the Broad. It is a non-profit with an affiliation with Harvard and MIT. Neither of them really love the Broad, but it is able to raise funds independently, have its own building and bring in faculty and students from both Harvard and MIT. Lander is the only faculty member on the both MIT hand Harvard faculty committees as a full member. The Broad has an independent board that governs it and isn't really accountable operationally to Harvard or MIT. Having said that, Eric is very different than me, he's an accomplished scientist and teaches Biology 101 at MIT, etc. My "thing" will probably more in the translational Lab x Anti Disciplinary Space area where a non-profit makes sense. We can put non-tenture track but interesting people and projects there and allow it to connect to the Media Lab so that both entities benefit. I think we can figure out a way to use the Media Lab branding, which I think will be important...
