LMK Begin forwarded message: From: Lawrence Krauss Subject: Re: Epstein gift Date: December 17, 2014 at 12:47:34 PM MST To: Richard Kahn < Cc: Lawrence Krauss >, Manfred Laubichler , Cynthia Schulze < >, Michelle Iwen , Chris Tulumello < TO: Richard Kahn From: Lawrence Krauss Re: Proposal for support for the Origins Project at ASU Activities Dear Rich: Following on our telephone call, we are extremely pleased that Jeffrey plans to support the Origins Project with a $1 M gift this month, to be followed by a $1 M gift in 2015, and hopefully to be followed with similar gifts to allow our program to continue with projected level of activity of up to 10 forefront workshops/yr, and 3-5 associated public events, to be held primarily in Tempe, but with remote locations to include NYC, DC, LA, London, Dublin, Prague, and Sydney. Attached you will find a provisional budget to run the programming. As we discussed, it will take time to coordinate the first of the new workshops (we are already holding 4 events in the winter and spring of 2015), so we expect the first of the new programs will begin sometime in the fall of 2015, with potentially 3 workshops in the fall, to be followed by up to 7 workshops in 2016, and then, if things are running successfully, up to 10 workshops in 2017. The budget shown, for $1.6 M/yr is based on a 10 workshop model, with full staffing. Staff will need to be hired in advance of course, and this will be carried out during 2015 with a number of staff hired in advance of the fall programming. We will supplement the $1M funding from Jeffrey with $300K in support from ASU, and the remainder in funds to be raised from other sources. As far as the content of the workshops is concerned, we have already been meeting to discuss details. I will also be discussing this with Jeffrey, who has already proposed a number of topics. Provisionally we plan workshops and events over the coming 2-3 years, in addition to our planned workshop in winter and spring of 2015 on Extinctions and Water, on the topics that including: EFTA01003314 The future of Artificial Intelligence and Cognition Complexity and Societal Scaling Pattern Recognition Origin of Life Origin of Disease Population economics Music and the Brain Origins of Capitalism Origins of Sex Mathematical Biology Origins of Cooperation Information and Signaling Human co-evolution with other species Limits to knowledge? Please let me know if you need anything else from me. I have already sent you the appropriate ASU forms for donation, including Pledge form and Wiring Instructions. Thank you, and Jeffrey for this remarkable support of our programming, which will bring Origins to a whole new level of impact.
