From: "Jeffrey E." <[email protected]> To: Leon Black Subject: it seems you need 2 numbers cac and alc - careful Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2017 11:52:34 +0000 Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a well-established risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease (CHD). Diabetic patients also have a higher mortality from CHD than patients without diabetesi '1 Patients with type 2 DM are known to have elevated triglycerides and total cholesterol levels, in addition to reduced levels of high-density lipoprotein.l2• 3] Not surprisingly, atherosclerosis is responsible for 80% of deaths in patients with diabetes.01 Coronary artery calcium (CAC) has been shown to correlate histologically with the amount of atheromatous plaque, which has a strong association with CHD.P, 63 Measurement of coronary calcium scores by electron beam tomography (EBT) has been validated by numerous studies, and EBT is the most sensitive, noninvasive method of detecting CHD.[6, 7] Patients with diabetes have been shown to have higher CAC scores, reflecting increased atherosclerotic burden, and hence, increased cardiovascular risk in these patients. A recent study by Qu et al[8] demonstrated that diabetic subjects with higher CAC scores had a 4-fold increased risk of cardiac events. In addition, large studies have shown an increased risk of cardiac events in asymptomatic patients with higher CAC sc please note The information contained in this communication is confidential, may be attorney-client privileged, may constitute inside information, and is intended only for the use of the addressee.
