Jeffrey Epstein, Science Activist, Advances Unique Mental Health Treatment in the US Virgin Islands.
The Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation has offered critical funds to Clear Blue Sky Inc., the largest mental
health clinic in the US Virgin Islands. Clear Blue Sky Inc. provides a unique and unprecedented approach
to mental health recovery focusing on integrating patients or "members" into the local community—to
enhance not just a sense of responsibility and belonging, but life goals, confidence and hope.
The Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation was founded in 2000 by Jeffrey Epstein, a financier, who established
the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics at Harvard University in 2003. The Program is the first of its kind
to study evolution from a purely mathematical point of view. His foundation now supports cutting edge
science research and education around the world.
Located in historic Villa Fairview in Charoltte, Amalie in St. Thomas, Clear Blue Sky Inc. is a part of the
International Center for Clubhouse Development (ICCD) and opened its doors in 2005. ICCD's history
dates back to 1948 but it was established in 1994 as a non-profit, non-governmental organization.
Today, ICCD has more than 350 centers worldwide, and is founded on the principal that recovery from
serious mental illness must involve the whole person in a vital and culturally sensitive community.
Indeed, much emphasis is given to integrating members with day to day activities of the local
community, from volunteer opportunities, internships, job skills and classes to attending cultural events.
By doing this, ICCD's pragmatic philosophy is to encourage belonging, structure, achievement, true life
goals and coping with mental illness in the real world. In addition to outside involvement, all members
work alongside the staff to organize the upkeep of the clinic and assist other members in meaningful
ways.
"ICCD and the communities they work with instill trust with their actions and that is essential for self-
esteem and achievement," Jeffrey Epstein stated.
For sixty years the ICCD Clubhouse model has evolved into a network of psychiatric rehabilitation
facilities helping thousands with mental illnesses reclaim their rightful place in society. Through the
Work Ordered Day and increased socialization, Clubhouses break the cycle of hospitalization,
medication, discharge, and hospitalization, giving mental health patients a powerful alternative to the
revolving door of institutionalization.
