Dear Jeffery,
I took the risk of sending you too many pages -
Linda had mentioned your interest in Music with the group at Harvard, and I also saw references to your interest in
evolution.
To introduce myself, here are some pages from the book that I am writing. They are not edited into their final version, but
hopefully they can give you an idea of what I am up to.
From our conversation, you mentioned the vagus nerve. This is at the heart of my work and Stephen has made great
contributions in this area. I am sending you a chapter on how we measurfe vagal function in our classes and when
appropriate in our treatments.
I am also enclosing 2 articles by Stephen. One is on Music therapy and I thought it might be of interest to you with regard
to your project at Harvard. He bases his Polyvagal Theory on the theory of evolution.
"Struggles...." is the opening few pagesof my book.
The next section of my book is: "The importance of the nervous system and the cranial nerves ...." relates the social
engagement nervous system, autism and to the faculty of hearing.
"evolution of the spine" is an introduction to the 11th cranial nerve which focuses in part on the trapezius muscle - this
section which is about 50 pages long and is the background for the one of the exercises that gave Linda such a major
improvement.
"Polyvagal Theory..." I talk about the 2 divisions of the vagal nerve
"Calibrating for chronic stress" is a way to evaluate vagal function so that we know if the patient needs the work on their
vagus and also we can tell immediately if we have done our job. My teacher stressed - "test, treat, test."
I hope that you find some of this interesting and that we get to meet sometime.
