The effort to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons has been at the top of the international agenda for the last several years. Most people agree that the best way to do this is to reach an accord where the Iranians agree to abandon this goal. Unfortunately, the terms of the agreement currently under discussion appear from media reports to be inadequate and dangerous. They insist that they are the sole arbiters of academic freedom, educational quality and professional standards. Like police departments that the public no longer trusts to investigate themselves, universities have become increasingly unreliable when it comes to addressing various types of academic malpractice. Consequently, like police departments, universities need oversight. One recent example of how universities fail to uphold the standards they profess occurred at the University of California, Riverside. Click Here to Continue Reading Fact of the Week Portuguese Citizenship Law Attracts 250 Jewish Applicants In March 2015, the Portuguese Parliament passed legislation entitling descendants of Jews who left Portugal during the Inquisition period Portuguese citizenship. Three months after the passing of the law, in June 2015, 250 applicants were informed by the Portuguese government that they qualify for citizenship rights under the new law. 200 of these certifications were issued by the Portuguese community of Porto, and 50 were issued by Lisbon. The majority of these approved applicants came from Turkey, but 15 applications were also sent from Israel, and an equal number from the United States. These individuals are not required to relocate to Portugal to receive their citizenship status.
