On the one hand we wish to protect the children from the grimy hands of paedophiles/ephebophiles and on the other hand the law (as interpret by the lowly magistrate judge) inform those with good intent to stay clear of the same children we wish to nurture into good citizens. Do we really want to head down this path? A quick browse for the U.S. shows that for Ohio and New Hamsphire, the age of consent is 13 years, whereas for Iowa and West Virgina it may be as low as 12 years.
