In this case, it's clearly a computational system that has operations and atomic elements. Here you seem to be considering the atomic elements. There's a standard dogma that the atomic elements (word-like) of human language "represent" (pick out, denote, etc.) extra-mental things. That's why standard works are called "Word and Object" (Quine), etc. Machine learning is resetricted to this case. That seems to be true of animal systems, and its true by stipulation of metamathematics. But it seems to be radically false for language. Where that comes from is a mystery, and I don't know even of conjectures to resolve it. From: Jeffrey E.
