O'Leary. You will be in excellent hands! To answer your questions: The early recovery period ( first 2-3 days) is determined by the extend =f surgery and anaesthesiologic aspects. If everything goes normal the =atient is able to get out of bed the same day or the day after surgery. =ou will most probably have tom wear a cervical brace for a while, and, =rovided that there will be no complications you should be able to do =ffice work after 7-10 days which also means that you should be able to =ravel. It will hovever take between 3.6 mos until the fusion is =ompleted. This would be the postoperative course under normal/ideal circumstances =ut I am sure that Dr. O'Leary can give you more specific information. It is of tremendous help. On one hand I have five =hysicians (Internist, Shoulder, Neurologist, Surgeon, Radiologist) who = trust telling me to have surgery; on the hand numerous clients of my =iterary agency are world-class scientists and MDs, and they have all =een cautioning me against rushing into surgery without having another =pinion. As Eric Kandel, a Nobel Laureate in Medicine, said, "You only =ave one neck, kid." Talk to someone else! So now I have done so and feel comfortable in proceeding with the =urgery and have left work with Dr.O'Leary's office to set up a =chedule. I do have one more general question: for either/both of the procedures =ou mentioned what would be a typical recovery period, i.e. when would I =e able to (a) get back to the office and (b) travel. Thanks again for your very fast response. I am in Munich several times a =ear and occasionally host interesting dinners. Perhaps you could join =n one night.
