Dear Sir George,
Greetings from your Institute for Music & Brain Science, with an attachment about a
forthcoming event in London on music and the brain.
Since we last corresponded The Institute has become bicoastal - - no, tricoastal, counting you,
Sir George - - I've added a professorship in music in the newly endowed Herb Alpert School
of Music at UCLA to my that of my usual academic home, neurology, at the David Geffen
School of Medicine at UCLA. To my knowledge, such a chimera (mutant?) has never
populated the planet.
At The Institute, Tom Sturges, Head of Creative at Universal Music has joined the Board, as has
Tim Rice, Director of the Alpert School. The Institute was fortunate enough to win a Grammy
Foundation Research Award this past year, and I a nomination for a governorship to the
Board of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.
I am in the midst of savoring - in proper chronological order - the digital remastcring of The
Beatles collection. I recall at our meeting your points about 1960's technology/monophonic
recordings (and the folly of the 1980 stereo CD releases) . But I am betwixt and between what
the 'correct' order, in fact, is: I know I should listen to "Introducing" in mono and "Abbey" in
stereo, but where one should cross over isn't clear. Help?!
Respectfully and admiringly yours,
Mark

Subject: The Musical Brain Conference 2010
Dear Dr Tramo,
I am contacting you about an event which may interest yourself and your colleagues at the
Institute for Music and Brain Science. Please find further details below:
Robert Schumann — The Man, the Mind, the Music
A conference on 2nd and 3rd October 2010 at St. John's Smith Square
The Musical Brain, now a registered charity, which aims to bring together artists, scientists,
teachers, therapists and the public to examine the effects of music and other art forms upon
the human mind, brain and body, is presenting this two-day event at one of London's leading
concert venues.
A brochure with conference and concert programme information, incorporating a booking form
is attached.
We are pleased to be able to offer a student rate of £50 for the two days or £30 for one day. The
full rate, which we have kept as low as we can, is £175 for two days or £90 for one day.
In the 200th anniversary year of his birth, Robert Schumann's mind and his music will be centre
stage. Professor Nigel Osborne will lead a conference team of distinguished neuroscientists,
psychiatrists and musicians, BBC Radio 3 presenter Stephen Johnson will speak on
Schumann's life and present studies of his work, and there will be three concerts, programmed
by The Musical Brain's Artistic Director, Ian Ritchie, and given by James Gilchrist tenor,
Anna Tilbrook piano, Ian Brown piano, and the Sacconi Quartet.
I hope that you and your colleagues may be interested in joining us for an intriguing weekend of
music and the mind. There will be time for discussion and questions from the floor.
A certificate listing the hours of attendance for CPD purposes will be supplied on request.
With best wishes,
Hilary Bartlett
