Yesterday Warren was admitted to a local hospital and have a full work up done He was seen by radiation oncology; medical oncology and a biopsy of metastatic cancer to his thoracic spine was obtained. Preliminary results should be back by Thurs, with some special genetic testing back later next week. The MRI of his brain showed numerous metastatic deposits; more than 17 different tumors. I don't know if even Warren knows that number; I got this from my telephone discussion with the Radiation oncologist. He will start whole brain radiation therapy on Thurs; it is usually given every day (except weekends) for 2 weeks. After that he will start the systemic therapy. probably chemo; depending on the specific pathology and genetic evaluation. Terry has provided 2 names of outstanding MD's at University of Texas southwestern where we will go for an opinion to see if they have something unique/investigational to offer. Once he has the date for the opinion I will arrange to go down there so I will go with him to the appointment and then we can strategize a plan all together. Warren appears relatively realistic; he told Terry he is a dead man walking. He is incurable but it is possible he can get some type of response to treatment that can buy him quality time. He is willing to take an aggressive stance if appropriate and that is the right attitude to have. I have privately spoken with Linda and she is fully aware of the critical nature of his illness as well. They both appear to be dealing with this as well as we could hope for. I'll keep you informed as things progress. Warrens friends are an essential source of support and strength for both him and Linda right now. The difference is vital in terms of treatment and prognosis. Also some lung cancers In "non-smokers" can be more treatable with remissions lasting years. As of today the most upsetting fact is that it is so extensive ; lung ,brain, liver and bone. How long? Without having details weeks to months. But with luck Maybe much better; depending on the specific type and other specific biological characteristics of HIS cancer. Not many people win the lottery but some do.
