Trellis looks very good, and we seem to need a 'simple fix' to physically attach your new pergola to the house, instead of dealing with special permits or whatever your town is concocting. I briefly spoke with both your Zoning guy and Town Planner this AM. It's really the Planner's call at this point as this gutless zoning official, Frank Auer, wouldn't return two of my calls from last week, and did not want to address any of this matter today with me. He's the same individual that gave me his verbal commitment over the phone to put up "anything without a roof" over the front terrace last summer, before we embarked on it. All of the sudden, he's become strangely disconnected from all of these conversations. Anyway that water is under the bridge... The Planner is Steven Klepper, who was very matter of fact earlier, reasonable, and seemed to be willing to find an appropriate solution to making this structure an attractive appendage of the main (principal building) house. He's now defining the current condition as-built as an unattached, accessory structure in the front yard, even though it's now fully physically linked to your house foundation wall along the terrace foundation, which all these pergola supporting columns are integrally bearing upon. Everything elsehas been built fully beyond the front principal building setback line according to permit plans. I had suggested to him of attaching a small, scaled trellis type element of similar pergola stock material to connect to the angled stoned corner by Ike's office door roughly about B feet away. He asked me to draw a quick sketch and send it to him for his review. I think this is good news. I'm asking you and Ike for permission to spend roughly 4 or 5 hours time to recreate this elevation sketch as accurately as I can using your pictures. I've got two similar ideas: One a horizontally connecting pair of similar beams on each side of the door (Bob's idea), and the second, my slightly embellished similar lx1 matching trellis nailing material on top of these two new beams. I will send both them to you, Ike, and Bob first, then the selected solution to be emailed directly to the Steve, most likely tomorrow sometime. Let's hope this exercise will solve this impasse.
