The reporter might think he's done with the story and told his editor he wasn't; able to get in touch with you. The fact that he didn't drop everything to talk to you is a bit unusual to me ("Sunday" and "deadline"). He might want to be looking for an out so he can stick to the story without any changes because he sold the editor on how hard he tried to talk to you. So it would be good to get word and get a time set up to talk to the editor so it looks like you're available just in case. You could wait until after you talk or not ... don't know enough of the crisis people dynamic and plans. But if the editor knows you will talk on background then he has a harder time shutting down the story.
