On Monday, Mardi 25, 2008, I immediately attempted to reach each victim and was able to speak directly to victims. VS Smith provided the victims with the name of the agencies and telephone numbers to Attorney Mandel and Attorney Buffkin. VS Smith explained to the victims that it's their prerogative if they decide to contact the above attorneys. Additionally, VS Smith explained to them as one of the investigative branches of the Department of Justice, my job as a Victim Specialist Is to ensure that victims' of a Federal crime are afforded their rights, information and resource referral. Also, VS Smith explained to the victims that if they feel threatened or harassed because of their cooperation with this investigation, to immediately reach out to the local police agency in their area. The victims were also advised to give a courtesty call to the case agent and/or the victim specialist regarding the local report. She will tell the girls to call only one of you (so you aren't juggling the same girls) and to state that they are calling about the Epstein matter in West Palm Beach, so you will know that it is one of our girls. Epstein has at least two investigators working full time chasing down these victims, so I would like them to be able to say that they have (or are getting) a lawyer, even if you end up securing individual attorneys in Florida for them later. I have been thinking about the conflicts issue that was raised, but I don't believe that any of their interests are adverse. I don't expect that you will ever have to cross-examine any of the victims, so there shouldn't be a problem with using information gained from one against another (or of using information gained from a victim against that same victim at a later time). I am sure that you all have more expertise on this, but those are my quick thoughts.
