I personally read the hundreds of letters and emails that this evil person perpertrated over 20 years among Al's academic colleagues and business partners, which were then just spread by those who received this information. Literally every time Al was mentioned on the Net as traveling somewhere or speaking somewhere, the letters would go out. They were extraordinarily lying, spiteful, evil (and I use that word advisedly) notes, intended to sow immediate doubt/honor/distaste and distance from Al by whoever received these statements. Even though the law suite finally prevailed and MGiver was 'silenced' , I can see that some of the old stuff is still floating around, unchecked and still causing damage. This is so unfair and so sad. I have personally spoken to many of Al's colleagues like Christof (in whose lab he worked for years) or Ramachandran and many others who hold Al and his work in the very highest regards. Al just recently gave the UCLA Marshak talk which is the most prestigious talk at UCLA, attended by the top faculty members and researchers. It was extremely well received and this the norm, not the lies of McGiver and those who without knowledge of the truth, continue to spread them. I can only hope that when anyone talks to you about him and resurrects these old lies, that at least you can know the truth and feel able to provide it to those people. It hurts me very much that this is out there (Al's lawyers told us that this case was the worst and most pernicious libel and slander case they had ever seen in their 30 years of lawyering). Al won his case because he was able to collect sworn testimonies by high-up people in the scientific community, produce documents that completely countered these statements as well as significant amounts of other documentation to prove his case. But I can tell you that the personal toll and stress on him was very very high, and it was a most difficult time. I don't need to tell you about stressful times! You have you own in spades about which I am personally sorry and I of all people, know about how damaging the Press can be in my own family!
