Elon Musk's Epstein Emails: Island Plans, SpaceX Tours, and "Three Girls' Passports"

DOJ-released emails reveal a deeper relationship than Musk has acknowledged

The DOJ's Epstein Files Transparency Act releases contain more than 16 emails between Elon Musk and Jeffrey Epstein, spanning November 2012 through at least December 2014. Musk co-occurs with Epstein in 1508 documents across the EFTA corpus. Every claim in this timeline cites a specific document ID that can be verified in the EFTA archive.

How They Met

Before any emails were exchanged, Musk and Epstein moved in overlapping intellectual circles. Both were connected to Al Seckel's Mindshift conference circuit and the EDGE.org network, a salon-style gathering of scientists, technologists, and billionaires that Epstein used to build relationships with the tech elite beginning around 2011.

Epstein positioned himself as a science philanthropist and intellectual connector. His New York townhouse hosted dinners where physicists, AI researchers, and Silicon Valley founders mingled. This was the ecosystem through which Epstein gained access to figures like Musk, Reid Hoffman, and Joi Ito.

"The Wildest Party" (November 2012)

On November 11, 2012, Musk emailed Epstein: "What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?"

He was not responding to an invitation. He was soliciting one. The island was Little St. James in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the property federal prosecutors would later describe as a site of systematic sexual abuse of minors.

By December 25, 2012, Musk wrote: "I've been working to the edge of sanity this year and so, once my kids head home after Christmas, I really want to hit the party scene in St Barts or elsewhere and let loose."

The visit didn't happen. Musk cited scheduling conflicts. But the tone of these emails, casual and eager and initiated entirely by Musk, contradicts later claims of reluctant or minimal contact.

SpaceX Factory Visit (February 2013)

On February 18, 2013, Musk personally invited Epstein to tour SpaceX: "It would be best to do so at the SpaceX rocket factory, which is quite close to Long Beach." Epstein accepted.

On February 25, Epstein visited SpaceX with three female assistants. Epstein's longtime assistant Lesley Groff coordinated the logistics, emailing passport copies for "Jeffrey and 3 girls" to arrange entry to the facility (EFTA02147114, EFTA01907455).

SpaceX is a defense contractor with ITAR restrictions. Visitor access requires identification verification. Groff's email sending passport copies for "3 girls" accompanying Epstein to a rocket factory has drawn scrutiny from researchers examining Epstein's pattern of traveling with young female assistants.

There is no evidence these assistants were minors, and "girls" was a term Groff used routinely in correspondence. But Musk extending a personal invitation, Epstein arriving with an entourage, passports coordinated in advance: this is not a casual drop-by.

3 AM Emails and Drug Suggestions (March 2013)

In a March 2013 exchange timestamped at 3 AM California time, Musk shared details of his punishing work schedule across Tesla and SpaceX. He was confiding in Epstein about the physical toll of running two companies simultaneously.

Epstein responded by suggesting Nuvigil (armodafinil), a Schedule IV wakefulness-promoting stimulant prescribed for narcolepsy and shift work disorder (EFTA01901196). Epstein was not a doctor. His unsolicited pharmaceutical recommendation during a late-night exchange about Musk's work habits shows a level of personal familiarity inconsistent with Musk's later characterization of the relationship as minimal.

At 3 AM Pacific, Musk was choosing to correspond with Epstein rather than his board members, executives, or family.

Brokering Introductions: Barak and Allen (April 2013)

In April 2013, Epstein offered to broker an introduction between Musk and former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, and extended an invitation to dinner with filmmaker Woody Allen (EFTA01896405).

Epstein's value to powerful people was not money. He had less than many of his contacts. It was access. He could put a tech CEO at a table with a former head of state and a cultural icon in a single evening. The Barak introduction is particularly relevant given Barak's own extensive documented relationship with Epstein, including approximately 30 visits to Epstein's residences and co-investment in surveillance technology startup Carbyne.

The Kimbal Musk and Boris Nikolic Connection (October 2012)

In October 2012, Kimbal Musk, Elon's brother, appeared in a group email chain with Epstein (using the address [email protected]) and Boris Nikolic ([email protected]). Nikolic was Bill Gates' science adviser who was later named executor of Epstein's will, a designation that surprised even Nikolic, who publicly declined the role (EFTA02032070).

The email thread discussed "Medication use higher among overweight, obese kids." Kimbal wrote a playful response. The significance is not the topic but the participants: Elon Musk's brother in direct three-way correspondence with both Epstein and a key figure in the Gates-Epstein orbit, predating most of the known Elon-Epstein emails.

The Musk-Epstein connection was not limited to Elon alone.

Island Planning, Round Two (December 2013)

On December 25, 2013, Musk wrote: "When should we head to your island on the 2nd?" Epstein replied: "Play it by ear if you want. Always space for you."

Groff followed up twice: "Did we need to organize Elon Musk to your island on Jan 2nd?" (EFTA01942151) and a memo: "Elon Musk was asking about coming to your island on Jan. 2" (EFTA01752536).

This was the second consecutive year Musk initiated island visit planning during the December holidays. "When should we head" is not hypothetical. Musk treated the visit as a given. Epstein's staff processed it as a confirmed plan. Whether the January 2014 visit actually occurred has not been confirmed or denied by Musk.

December 2014: The Last Scheduling Note

Epstein's files contain a December 2014 scheduling note: "Reminder: Elon Musk to island Dec. 6 (is this still happening?)"

Three consecutive Decembers. 2012, 2013, 2014. Each with island visit coordination in the record. The parenthetical "is this still happening?" suggests the visit had been planned but its status was uncertain. Not that it had been refused.

2015 Dinner: Musk, Zuckerberg, and Epstein at Reid Hoffman's Table

In August 2015, Reid Hoffman hosted a dinner in Palo Alto. Epstein attended. So did Musk. Epstein took a photograph of Musk and Mark Zuckerberg sitting at the same table. Peter Thiel was also reportedly present.

This was seven years after Epstein's 2008 conviction and registration as a sex offender. By 2015, Epstein's criminal history was a matter of public record. Silicon Valley's elite continued to socialize with Epstein well into the post-conviction period. Musk was among them.

"Elons and Jeff Space Goals" (March 2017)

In March 2017, Epstein emailed Reid Hoffman and Joi Ito, referencing "elons and jeff space goals." Not "Mr. Musk." Not "Musk." The casual first name suggests ongoing familiarity in Epstein's circles, three to four years after Musk has claimed the relationship ended.

Whether Musk was aware Epstein was still invoking his name is unknown. Epstein clearly still considered Musk part of his social narrative.

"Man Child" and the Administrative State (August 2018)

In August 2018, Epstein privately described Musk as a "man child" and noted they "share your dislike of the administrative state." Two things to note here.

First, Epstein was still tracking and privately discussing Musk's political evolution six years after their earliest documented emails. Second, the "dislike of the administrative state" observation proved accurate: Musk now leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is charged with dismantling federal regulatory infrastructure.

Musk's Public Statements vs. The Record

Musk has said several things publicly:

  • He confirmed visiting Epstein's NYC townhouse once, briefly, around 2012 with then-wife Talulah Riley.
  • He stated he "had very little correspondence with Epstein and declined repeated invitations to go to his island."
  • On X (Twitter) on September 28, 2025, he posted: "Epstein tried to get me to go to his island and I REFUSED."
  • He later walked this back to "I came to my senses," conceding he had initially planned to visit but ultimately did not go.

The DOJ documents show at least 16 direct emails, a SpaceX factory tour with an entourage, late-night pharmaceutical advice, social brokering with world leaders, multiple rounds of island visit planning across three consecutive years, and references to Musk spanning 2012 through 2018. "Very little correspondence" does not describe what is in the record.
