MIT linguist; multiple post-conviction meetings with Epstein; defended the interactions

Also known as: Avram Noam Chomsky

MIT Institute Professor Emeritus and one of the most cited scholars in modern history, known for transformational grammar and political activism. Met with Jeffrey Epstein multiple times after Epstein's 2008 conviction. In 2023, the Wall Street Journal reported that Chomsky had met with Epstein at least twice, including a March 2015 dinner that also included Israeli historian Benny Morris and former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. When contacted by journalists, Chomsky confirmed the meetings, stating they were 'intellectual discussions' involving academics and that he saw 'nothing wrong' with meeting Epstein. Chomsky also acknowledged that Epstein arranged a financial transfer for him related to reorganizing funds after the death of his first wife — he described this as a routine banking transaction.

Epstein's 2015 calendar showed multiple scheduled meetings with Chomsky. Critics noted the apparent contradiction between Chomsky's decades of political commentary on power and exploitation and his willingness to socialize with a convicted sex offender. Chomsky has maintained that anyone can talk to anyone and that the meetings had no sinister implications.
